The Story Behind Boxing Day and How to Celebrate It

Boxing Day, celebrated on the 26th of December, is a well-loved holiday in the UK and several other Commonwealth countries. Historically, Boxing Day dates back to the Victorian era, when it became a day for giving back. Traditionally, servants who worked on Christmas Day were given a “Christmas box” containing money, gifts, or leftover food to enjoy with their families on the day after Christmas. It was also a time for people to donate boxes of gifts or food to the less fortunate, an act of goodwill that remains part of Boxing Day’s spirit.

Today, Boxing Day has taken on new traditions. For many, it’s a day to unwind after the festivities of Christmas, spend time with family, and enjoy leftovers from the big day. It’s also become synonymous with shopping, with many stores offering post-Christmas sales and discounts. Some families continue the tradition of giving, while others might head out for a brisk walk or engage in sports. Whether you're relaxing, shopping, or enjoying a family outing, Boxing Day is a time to pause, reflect, and keep the holiday spirit going.
